The detrital zircon age spectrum from the Reynolds Range Group is similar, although the youngest cluster of ages is younger and dates to between Ma and Ma. Although the observed differences in ages are subtle, we suggest these nevertheless mark a significant change in provenance. This orogenic belt marks collision between the North Australian and Kimberley cratons, an event dated to between Ma and Ma and which incorporates marginally older rocks dating to Ma from the foreland of the Kimberley Craton.
By contrast we attribute the influx of younger rutile and zircon, together with a distinct facies change observed with the onset of the deposition of the Reynolds Range Group, to a shift in provenance region to the Yapungku Orogen, which marks the collision between the West Australian and North Australian cratons and is dated to ca. A Nature Research Journal. Rutile, a common accessory mineral in a wide variety of rocks, is the most stable naturally occurring TiO 2 polymorph. The relationship between its trace element composition and formation conditions has provided geoscientists with discriminant tools for fingerprinting geological processes, such as magmatic evolution and subduction zone metamorphism, alongside applications to the study of sediment provenance. In the present work, volcaniclastic rock samples belonging to Fara and Saiq Formations, outcropping in Jebel Akhdar mountains, Oman, are studied with Raman spectroscopy and Electron Microprobe EMP aiming: of i the identification of different naturally-occurring TiO 2 polymorphs, ii the evaluation of their trace element contents in relation with hydrothermal alteration features, and iii the analysis of the mineral reactive pathways behind the observed textural relationships.
Raman investigations demonstrated that interstitial, fine-grained TiO 2 corresponds to anatase, whereas rutile occurs as isolated single grains. EMP determinations further revealed that an identified Nb-enrichment in anatase is coupled with a corresponding Nb-depletion in rutile. The combination of the obtained results with petrographic observations enabled unravelling the TiO 2 reactive pathways affecting the studied samples.

This paper presents new data related to the emplacement ages of the Amakinskaya and Taezhnaya kimberlites of the Mirny field, Siberia, located in the southern part of the Yakutian diamondiferous province. This study analyzed rutile and titanite grains along with zircons for U-Pb isotope composition by laser ablation LA -inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry ICP-MS and evaluated the applicability of rutile and titanite for the dating of kimberlite emplacements.
Both minerals contain substantial admixtures of common Pb in their Pb isotope composition. Therefore, the Pb method was applied for common Pb correction during age calculation. All age estimates correspond to the main epoch of diamondiferous kimberlite activity in the Siberian platform and suggest the formation of the Mirny kimberlite field within a single event or two separate events occurring close together in time. Results obtained from this study indicate that rutile and titanite can be useful for the dating of kimberlite emplacements.

Time resolved rutile U/Pb data derived from LA-ICPMS – a case study from the North Pamir
Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry ; 83 1 : — Rutile TiO 2 is an important accessory mineral that, when present, offers a rich source of information about the rock units in which it is incorporated. It occurs in a variety of specific microstructural settings, contains significant amounts of several trace elements and is one of the classical minerals used for U—Pb age determination.
Here, we focus on information obtainable from rutile in its original textural context.
Rutile mineralisation identified to date has generally not been spatially constrained by drilling at either of the two main prospects, Kasiya.
Sovereign has identified a potentially globally significant, strategic rutile province across its large Malawi ground holding. The Malawi Rutile Province features two confirmed, discrete rutile mineralisation styles hosted respectively in sand and saprolite soft, friable weathered material which are both amenable to conventional processing.
Rutile mineralisation identified to date has generally not been spatially constrained by drilling at either of the two main prospects, Kasiya saprolite and the Bua Channel sand. The Company is targeting large resources that could support long-life, large-scale rutile production. The mineralised zone continues to be open along strike in both directions and open laterally to the south east. All mineralisation occurs from surface and is hosted in soft, free-dig, friable saprolite.

Chemical analyses show that rutile included in other minerals Rt inc commonly show higher SiO 2 and FeO contents and lower Nb 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 contents if compared with rutile in the matrix of the garnet-rich layer Rt mat. Cr 2 O 3 concentrations are quite similar in both types of rutile. Rt mat commonly shows a greater variability in minor elements, especially Nb 2 O 3 0. Few compilations of geochemical and geochronological data on rutile in Variscan metabasites can be found in literature, thus these data represent a new insight on a mineral phase the significance and scientific interest of which are rising in the last years.
Future studies on the origin and ages of emplacement and metamorphism either prograde or retrograde of this kind of rock, widespread in the Variscan chain, will benefit from these data as a term of comparison.
